The Death of the DVD?
But I don’t see this sort of thing becoming the norm in our existence until business catches up with technology. At the rate that industry groups, like the RIAA, are going… that is probably not going to happen before those of us reading this article are old and gray and contemplating our grandchildren cutting the grass for us.

I don’t know how long the DVD will last a dominant media, but the options he presents are not very attractive to me.
His idea of a getting a hard drive a month with various movies on it seems particularly weird. If I like a movie I want to own it, so I can watch it any time I desire, not just any time in a given month. On the other side, recieving a hard drive with a bunch of movies I didn’t like would bother me probably more than paying for a premium cable movie service and getting a bunch of movies I didn’t like. At least with the movie service I can pretend that tomorrow there will be better choices.
Also, I don’t see any real advantages of using a Hard Drive rather than other media. Sure, a hard drives will be able to grow, but I think he is crazy if he thinks that HD digital files will not have a standard.
It is also interesting that at one point he talks about how it takes too long to down load an HD file, thus making piracy undersirable with this medium, and later he talks about companies providing overnight simulcast downloads to your hard drive overnight.

I don’t know that such a technology is convenient to be honest. I tend to like to own movies that I enjoy myself, and I think most people do. There are those of us that are very proud of our dvd/vhs movie collections, to the point of needing to buy more space to store them where everyone can see them. That’s not something easily done with a hard drive.
I do suspect that the technology will become much more portable than it is currently and something like a memory stick for DVD’s will be available, but in the requisite “I can display it on my rack.” packaging.
