Syria’s Half Measures

And the White House is obviously a tad miffed.

Who can blame them? The UN as well as the US told Syria to pack up their toys and leave Lebanon. Not in the next two years, or whenever it is convenient for Damascus to move the troops. It wasn’t the sort of thing that you do with a kindergartener who’s been playing in the sandbox too long. It was the sort of thing that you do to the second grader who knows that it’s time to leave when you say so and you look at them and say, “Johnny James Somesuch! You get out of there right now!”

That’s what it was. That menacing tone of voice was also implied because… with UN backing… we may just be forced to spank the Syrian government for misbehaving. I hope that international economic sanctions is all this has to come down to, but somehow I fear that a UN peacekeeping (isn’t that a contradiction in terms?) force will be sent to defend Lebanon’s borders.… [Read More]

Shot hostage disputes U.S. account? – Shot hostage disputes U.S. account – Mar 6, 2005

Given that this article states very clearly at the end, that the aforementioned hostage and her newspaper have been “fiercely against the war”, I have to wonder about the veracity of her statements with regard to US troops. Somehow, I suspect those soldiers told the truth, and she, who was in the back seat of the car, had no clue what happened because she was too busy talking about how happy she was to be released and made up her own version, or gave the best story that made sense based on what she experienced, and her political views have colored the telling of her story.

It would be nice if, every once in a while, people would just say “It all happened so fast that I have no idea why they opened fire on us.”

I’d be willing to bet that this is far closer to the truth than the rose colored version she’s feeding the media.… [Read More]

Sir Bill Gates

Bill Gates given Honorary Knighthood.

I blogged Sir Mick. I had to blog this as well. Bill Gates has been bestowed with an honorary knighthood. Apparently, people who are not citizens of the UK can become full-fledged knights, but hey… it’s as close as America gets.. and honestly, it doesn’t get much more American-iconic than Bill Gates, like him or not.… [Read More]

What Adulthood Qualifies Us For…

From the New York Times (subscription required).

The issue of juvenile death sentencing is not what I wish to discuss here. What I actually want to touch upon is the issue of when we call children adults. From a legal standpoint, I can understand why this has to be defined at a set age in years, but as any adult knows, you don’t just turn 18 and instantly become an adult. This is something that comes with time and experience. Adulthood is a milestone in our social and psychological development. It’s kind of like entering high school, with less peer pressure and more stress from other sources.

As a parent, I am responsible for the growth and development of my children. I watch them grow and change and learn, and I want everything in the world for them. I cannot honestly say that I would support the death penalty where they are concerned.… [Read More]
